WHAT ARE ADAPTOGENS?
Adaptogens are various but select groups of plants, herbs and fungi that support the body’s natural ability to deal with stress. They are rightfully named “adaptogens” because of their uniquely nonspecific ability to “adapt” their function in respect to the needs of the body. This may be physical, neurochemical, chemical or biological*.
There are dozens of plants, herbs and fungi growing in some of the world’s harshest environments, that find themselves in the adaptogen category.
"Adaptogenic herbs act in non-specific ways to increase resistance to stress, without disturbing normal biological functions", explains alternative medicine champion Dr. Andrew Weil.
Each ones effect may be slightly little different from the other, but on the whole, adaptogens help your body handle external stressors. Adaptogens can do for your adrenal glands what lifting weights does to your muscles. They do this by interacting with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathoadrenal system, adjusting hormone production and physiological responses to ensure the body functions optimally.*
One well-known adaptogen, Rhodiola Rosea, is said to enhance mental performance and physical stamina. Others, like Schizandra are used to resist infections, increase skin health, and combat insomnia. While other like Reishi, Ashwagandha and holy basil soothe stressed adrenals, boost immune responses, assist in sleep quality.*
WHAT ARE NOOTROPICS?
Well to start, the word nootropic is derived from two Greek words: “nous,” which means mind, and ”tropein,” which means to bend or turn, so quite literally they are Mind Benders or Mind Turners.
The term Nootropic is currently being used more broadly to refer to anything that supports and can enhance cognitive function, and in some cases has been coined a “neurocogitive technology”.
Research suggests that nootropics can:
- Enhance memory*
- Improve behavior under adverse conditions*
- Shield the brain from injury by physical or chemical means*
- Improve tonic cortical/subcortical control mechanisms*
- Enhance neurocognitive and executive brain function*
Although “Nootropics” are relatively new topic often discussed by those who research biohacking and neurohacking, there has been many cultures with evidence of the use of plants used to influence mood and cognition, such as Bacopa, Rhodiola, Cordyceps and many others, dating back more than 10,000 years.
WHAT IS MYCOGENICS?
Mycogenics are medicinal mushrooms used for health and wellbeing. Mushrooms have been used medicinally since at least 3000 bce. So how exactly do medicinal mushrooms support the immune system?
Each beneficial mushroom species contains a wide variety of nutrients and compounds to support our natural immunity. The immune system is activated by polysaccharides, terpenes, and various other compounds found in mushroom mycelium and fruitbodies. The variety and multitude of nutrients found in mushrooms is the key to immunomodulation.*
What is IMMUNOMODULATION?
Simply put, Immunomodulation encompasses all therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying the immune response. Augmentation of the immune response is desirable to prevent infection in states of immunodeficiency.*
Mushrooms are beneficial immunomodulators and can help regulate the immune system to support longevity and health by maintaining a balanced immune system response.* Mushrooms are reported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular-protective, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, and anticancer properties. It is well-established that mushrooms are adept at immune modulation and affect hematopoietic stem cells, lymphocytes, macrophages, T cells, dendritic cells (DCs), and natural killer (NK) cells.*
Extensive research over the last 40 years has demonstrated that mushrooms have potent antineoplastic properties that slow growth of tumors, regulate tumor genes, decrease tumoral angioneogenesis, and increase malignant-cell phagocytosis.*
